junaio Success Story: USA Today Success Story

Challenge

USA TODAY, one of the largest newspapers of America, wanted to offer its readers an Augmented Reality experience in combination with its print edition. The Super Bowl XLV, the greatest sports event in the United States, was selected as a platform of extreme high visibility for this in print publication and junaio became the technology of choice.

Solution

Two different AR scenarios were chosen. Starting with the February 4th edition of the paper, smartphone users could enjoy a 360 degree tour of the fabulous Dallas Cowboys stadium, presented by Jerry Jones, stadium and Cowboys owner, along with interior and exterior highlights. The February 7th edition gave readers a 3D view of the "Play of the Game" in an animated sequence, which could be viewed from any angle, and the ability to display player stats.

Conclusion

For USA TODAY, the project showed how mobile Augmented Reality is able to bring additional value to everyday life by augmenting print editorials with 360˚ imaging, sound and even 3D animations, thus enriching the reader's experience by simply using his smartphone. Interesting in this case was that the 3D animation of the key play of the game showed how even current news can be interpreted using AR techniques.
